Just to prove I am not just totally in love with Original Skateboards, I took delivery of a Freebord Avant this morning and can't wait to get Freebording as well as Longboarding and surfing and skating :)
Please direct all reply posts of disgust and disappointment and exclaimations of "how could you" and "Your not a real Longboarder" to me
Nick :)

be careful of your wrists!
be careful of your wrists! imagine falling as often as you do on a snowboard, but on concrete!
It does look kinda fun though, pity you cant push them.
Pushing a Freebord
I have my full set of pads that I use for longboarding which includes the wrist protectors. I can't break my wrists otherwise I couldn't work!! the sticker on the board is great, it says be aware this sport is extremely dangerous and can cause death ha ha!!
I was talking to the suppier and he said you can push them but you have to make sure that you have edge to edge contact to do it. So not really practical if you are on the pavement and there is people. Still can't beat regular longboard for darting in and out of people.
I keep seeing longboarders on my way home along K Road and Great North Road. Am I the only one that wears helment and pads. Every other longboarder I see isn't wearing any protection at all!!
Nick
thats casue they are idiots.
thats casue they are idiots. i'll show you my 'brand new' helemet when you get to wellington that has major gashes out of it from 40-50km/hr crashes...
Can you not pump on them like those sidewinder things? If you could use just the middle wheels?
No Pumping please!
Nope. No pumping. The board is pretty solid and doesn't flex much at all. I was expecting it to be more like a snowboard construction but the deck is more like a shortboard construction. It doesn't have 2 sections with that twist spring in the middle like a Snake or sidewinder board.
Bascially it has 2 small rollerblade wheels that are located behind the 13inch trucks at the front and back. These can rotate 360 degrees. They are located dead centre so mimic the flat of a snowboard. So just like snowboarding if you try and ride on just these wheels the board will be unstable and slip around.
So you use the 13 inch trucks a bit like stabilisers on a kids bike. You go from heel to toe always staying on the edges of your board. Sliding technique is the same as longboarding except it is much easier to do coz of the centre wheels. you do a carve and then move your weight more to the centre of the board and push out with your back foot.
You can maybe carve on the flat going from edge to edge. I haven't read anywhere that you can but I will try it and let you know.
protection depends on what you're doing
i've noticed that many, many people on this site are bloody helmet police...
protective gear certainly has it's time and place, but that's it - it's time and place.
now, would i cane down a hill @ 50+kph without a helmet? nah. would i take a casual roll down the street, or hit a bowl without a helment? all the time. same with pads - depending on the terrain, board or my level of confidence, i'll pad up what i know i'll possibly need to protect.
alot of it comes down to common sense. sure, promote safe riding and the use of protective gear, but do remember that some of those preaching the necessity of helmets are also the same that are sharing public roads with cars (which raises the question, which is more foolish - no helmet or risking yourself with a tonne or so of metal?)
i don't really care whether who i skate with is padded/helmeted up, but since they are generally my age or older, they're a little more clued-up and are adult enough to make their own bed. so i guess on a (non hardcore DH) session that requires helmets, you'll probably never see me... ;)
ahh, rant over. i'd rather be in the sun rolling that stuck in partition hell!
Helmet Police...?
NNO encourages all its members to wear helmets at all times(sidewalk cruising/pedestrian slalom not included). Why you ask, because you never know when your gonna need to be wearing one. Yes there are lots of us who will not ride with you unless your wearing a lid, because we don't want our sessions cut short by having to take you to A&E when you smack your head. I for one will leave your sorry bust ass and keep skating, cuz if you don't care about your head why should care if you have a concussion. Yeah i may be coming off a little harsh, but thanx to magazines and and companies that promote shortboard skating, helmets have been tossed aside in favor of 'style' and 'image'. Weather you're bombing a hill at 40-90, throwing down 50 foot submission slides, ripping it up in the bowl or commuting thru the streets, wearing a helmet isn't going to make you look any less steezy. Tony Alva, god father of pool skating rides pools everyday and still wears a bucket.
Last summer 2 guys died here in NZ as a result of major head trauma. Neither was bombing hills, or thrashing in the park, they were both just out for a push. So yeah maybe i'm part of the helmet police, but really what's wrong with wearing a helmet? Lead by example, show the rest of society that longboarders have some common sense and put your lid on and think about this, whats worse, wearing a helmet or the risk of having your fish'n chips fed to you thru a straw by a loved one? I don't want to be reading about any of you in the news paper unless you've done something positive.

Glad I'm not the only one stuck in Partition Hell
Thank god for the internet
We kinda changed the
We kinda changed the original post but why not wear a helemet?
I think we need STAY ON
I think we need STAY ON TOPIC POLICE!
I like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, its awesome, you all should try.
I don't get why the topic of
I don't get why the topic of wearing helmets still even comes up... you're an idiot not to wear one... u never know when ur going to fall
but on topic
thumbs down 6 wheelers!

I love the hard core element on this site
I really do love the passion for Longboarding on this site. don't get me wrong, Longboarding is my favourite. I would love to get me a stupidly long board and just cruise all day long (not into the downhilling side as you know) However I do like to try all the boarding types of things that are going on.
I agree Freebording isn't really to do with this site if it is just a Longboarding site.
Still can't wait to try it out tho :)
i'm jonesing to try out
i'm jonesing to try out snowskating this winter.
a mate of mine, after watching a few freeboard videos, is really really keen to try it out too...although i reckon it'd be the death of him! :) not my cuppa, i need to ride something that can GRIND!
helmets: i wear one when i perceive the need. other than that i came from the no-helmet generation. i must say though that i enforce helmets on my girls when they cycle or skate, partly 'cause they're klutzes!
Six wheels is cool, if your
Six wheels is cool, if your name is Chris Chaput and your riding a board that has dual front trucks OR your street luging.
And MC, you should lead by example, if you're not willing to wear a helmet why should your daughters wear them. I was prob born in the same decade as you. Saying that your from a no-helmet generation does not excuse you from using common sense.

Sticking with the topic...
Sticking with the topic...in relation to freebords, flowbords, skateboards, longboards, weatherboards (?), and any other type of board or for that matter anything at all in this wide world: "DON'T KNOCK IT UNTIL YOU TRY IT", and even if you do, and you don't like it, don't rip on others for having a go.
I always see longboarders having a go at skaters for being so narrow minded about hating on longboarders, but that same sentiment is being returned...
I was just voicing my
I was just voicing my opinion on freeboards. I personal don't feel the need for the other 2 wheels the freeboards have or the need to lock my feet into a board... I'm just poking fun at the 6 wheelers. I'm sure it does have it's appeal but in the end it's all boarding and the more people that ride longboards the more the scene grows...

spent awhile searching
spent awhile searching google images for that?
don't be a hater
you can push them!!! not as easy as a longboard, but it can be done.
Freebords didn't always have bindings, they developed when a guy who had an artifical leg found it hard to ride and have the control over the board. The bindings allowed him to have more control and has allowed huge progression in the sport. Freebording is trying to be like snowboarding. where as longboarding may have some similarities but its not where its derived from.
There is going to continue to be new board sports to come and go.

I've got a spare board if any one is willing/wanting to try it out sometime. hit me up.
A board is a board?
A board is a board, Right? If your stoking on a Slalom board, freebord, longboard, pool board what does it matter. Your stoked! Dont be shitting on others stoke please.
HELMETS - IMO, ultimately its up to the individual and as a longboard community we should positively promote safe riding practices. Im sure i have said this in another thread but im gonna go again, My Girl is a Nurse in a Neurology ward (brain injuries), some of the stories i have heard about people of all ages becoming paralyzed or worse are just tragic and could have been easily avoided if a helmet was worn and clipped up properly. thats my 10 cents worth, my 2 cents is free.
IM STOKED RIGHT NOW!!!
Def keen Josh
Awesome, I was about to ask if someone had one I could try out.
I hope you're in wellington?
Also, does anyone have one of those electrical skateboards, or petrol powered skateboards I could test out? Or a mountainboard? I think you can hire mountainboards up north somewhere, but good if someone in Welly has one.

Mr. Simpson please do not offer my god a peanut
-----------------------------------------------
I got a petrol one I don't
I got a petrol one I don't ride it becasue it scares the crap out of me
Lol
Whys that? Doesn't it come with some kind of hand held speed adjustor? The thing I would be worried about most is braking and takeoff. I read about some dude who died after falling off one of those @ 30km without a helmet. Ouch. :(

Mr. Simpson please do not offer my god a peanut

I used to have one.
I used to have a freebord and it seriously was a hell of a lot of fun. Took me a while to learn but it was how i learned to snowboard too. Got rid of it cos there's not enough decent roads in christchurch for it. Never ever freebord without a helmet though.
race?
Anyone wanna race me down liverpool st in auckland? ill use my freebord and you guys can use your longboards. helmets are a must.
see if us 6 wheels are as bad as yall think
your on
But since you chose the road i get to choose where on the hill the start line and finish are.
Keen to race for pink slips? you know to make it interesting?
pink slip haha
dont remind me of Fast and the furious i dnt like those movies
when would
when would you be keen to do it i may come out depending on time and i no a few others would to prove we are the master of DOWNHILL
wots the point in racing
wots the point in racing there? its short steep and straight. why wouldn't you choose somewhere more exciting, like the sugar factory atleast. I personally can't coz my knees are still thrashed. Not to be a dick and i could be mistaken, but didn't the freeborders need their own catagory at Rollercoaster last year coz the longboarders were leaving y'all in the dust?
THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS "I USED TO SK8"
love u dane
longboards are going to own on anything like the rollercoaster hill to Chelsea. anything steeper than that then a longboard may have abit on controlling speed(eg. liver pool).
i reakon a freeborder could bet a longboarder down corinthan.... what ya reakon?
end of the day its like racing a orange and grapefruit down the street. they just an't the same.
let the bad mouthing continue, i love it.
Oranges and grapefruit...?
Oranges and grapefruit...? short course oranges all the way. long course, grapefruit for the win. I take your betting on the steep straight street over a more interesting street with corners due to the fact that freebords scrub off speed over long corners. For the record corinthian was about the same grade as the rollercoaster course where the longboards decimated the freebords, or am I wrong?
THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS "I USED TO SK8"
Corinthian is rather
Corinthian is rather technical so i reakon the freebord can get down there abit faster and its abit steeper then rollercoaster for sure.
corinthian technical?
i wudnt call that hill technical a longstraight followed by a mellow bend very technical.........
Pffft I'll beat everyone
Pffft I'll beat everyone anyway Whatever your riding because pure awesome wins and since I am pure awesome I win so there ha ha ha
shit, wrong hill i mean the
shit, wrong hill i mean the one in the city. lombard style. the one with the back pakers up it.
you mean
costititution hill (if thats how you spell it ) the one with 5 hairpins in a row?
A decent longboarder
who can drift well will be faster down con hill. More traction with the right set up and will hold more speed down the hill.
Dane, we on for this race? pinks? I place the start and finish you pick the hill seems fair to me! Only other rule that i want to put in place is that you have to SKATE the whole hill, one foot on the the board unless you crash.
not sure what im going to do with a freeboard but who know you may end up with a sick dh deck ?
DUDE!!!!!
Site looks awesome bro, congrats
thanks!
wrong thread but big thanks for the big ups! Means a lot and makes the many hours screaming at my puter while trying to learn interweb code worth while...
Mmmm thread hyjack
check out www.ugliecarnie.com
sure race
i will deff say longboards are faster, all 4 big wheels on the ground verse 2 small wheels with 4 wheels allways having to start rolling again. 4 will always win. BUTTTTTTT a race down liverpool street from the top to the bottom is the only race worth racing as we all know longboards are faster. but steep involves skills.
fair
how would it be fair if u get to choose start and finish line. it needs to be mutal.
for example Chelsea, a longboard is going to carve up the bottom section but maybe a freeborder has a chance from the very top.
its fair .....
he choose the road so I get to choose the start and finish.
Actually, i was hoping to make a very subtle point to all but needed josh to bite...
I was hoping that when he did I would make the start at the very bottom and the finish at the top to point out that the best board is the one for the style of riding you want to hit on the type of road you want to hit.
I think that a freeboard against speedboard race is pointless as they are just not in the same class. Both are super fun so both are ok by me!

Hence why i didnt agree
Hence why i didnt agree because that was the obvious reaction.
What i don't understand is how people bag on freebording but have never learnt how to rode one.
Freebording has complete 100% control. stop when you want, float in and out of switch very easily. Thats why i freebord.
I also own a longboard( ive owned 5 in total). ive recked twice at 60km longboarding ( once on film at the end of a old longboard film " a billion miles") and never freebording, thats the attraction for me.
My posts were sarcasm but i guess the internet is hard to pick up on that..
I have freeboarded
I have freeboard in welly but I just don't like the ride, its just not my personal preference and I dont think freeboards are poo. They are rad but just not my thing.
I was just trying to make the point that no one board is best at every thing and we need to be stoked about all skate craft no matter the shape or form. Dane i felt that you asking someone to race on a hill that YOU felt gave you an unfair advantage was more to prove that freeboards are better than a genuine fun day of fair racing.Yes I was being cheeky and showing you that even on a hill you had hoped to use your slide powers on could be very hard for your style of board turning the tables on your advantage cause pushing is defiantly a bit harder on your style of skate craft.
the only part of your post i don't think is fair is the 100% control, NO board or ride system is able to claim 100% control. Control comes from the rider understanding his craft and how to manage it safely. How long did you spend training your colman slides? Did you give it as much time as you gave to learning how to speed check with your freeboard? I feel that my colman is as controlled as any freeboard slide because that where i put my training hours not because of what ride.
I'll admit that I'm guilty of having the same pride of my chosen discipline of speedbaording but recently have fallen for a 1.4m waterski and have regained a respect for any skate craft! I have had my eyes opened and am going to make a big effort to keep my stoke for any thing with wheels and not get distracted by how many wheels it has or the system it uses...
www.UglieCarnie.com
I can't beleive you're
I can't beleive you're having an affair with my waterski and didn't tell me. Somehow, deep down inside I knew that ski was a slapper. But i should have known she end up with someone else if I couldn't rider the way she needed to be ridden....tear....THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS "I USED TO SK8"
i love this. its soooooo
i love this. its soooooo goood. your no silly man mr jestah. love your work.
I have to thank nick
I have to admit that it has been an extremely hard year for me, I have been stuck in a bit of a dark patch and had trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I have been a bit negative on nno which is not inline with the values of the site...
Nick and I have recently had a meeting that showed that things are back on the right track and big things will happen if we keep our feet open to any product that results in smiles. Nick's stoked for all things skate also rubbed of big time and to reinforce the fact Speedy recently has let me take his beast that has showed me clearer than ever...
Its not what you ride but HOW you ride!
